D iabetes is a chronic condition in which the body is unable to control blood glucose levels. Diabetes is highly prevalent in New Zealand with 200,000 people diagnosed of it. This disease is of two types:

Type 1 – it is caused by insulin deficiency because of the destruction of insulin producing cells. It is less common than type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 – it occurs because of higher level of glucose levels in the blood. It is linked with obesity also. In this case, the pancreas are the not able to secrete enough of insulin and they get more sluggish over time as the condition gets worsen.

If we talk about the management of diabetes, it is really important to manage it well, because diabetes keeps getting worse and its health consequences may even lead to death in severe conditions. Weight loss and regular physical activity along with a strict diet regime are the important things that should be the priority in the management.

Treatment

Homeopathy has cured a whole range of disease conditions be it acute or chronic. In the past great homeopathic practitioners like Dr. Hahnemann, Dr. Kent, Dr.Farrington, and many more great homeopaths have treated diabetic cases with homeopathy all over the world. In my practice as a homeopathic intern in the hospital and as a practitioner in India I have seen a few cases of diabetes and also the consequences of diabetes such as “diabetic foot” or gangrene. Fortunately with the gods grace I was able to help people in their suffering.

There are so many remedies that I have seen working well in diabetes. More often I have been able to help people decrease their insulin intake slowly so that they can enjoy a healthy life. By taking homeopathic medicine in the worst case scenario, the condition is palliated to give and add more years to the patient’s life.

There are hundreds of homeopathic medicines that could be used to treat and manage diabetes. Homeopathic medicines that I have used and experienced giving to the diabetic patients in my practice during my study in medical college and practice are acetic acid, arsenic, coca, phosphorous, phosphoric acid, syzigium jambolanum and uranium nitricum.

While taking the whole case, after looking at the totality of the symptoms, the homeopath gets a few medicines that he/she might think would be indicated. Then after complete repertorisation and consultation with materia medica, medicines are selected.

Now, I would like give you an idea how therapeutically medicines could be selected and eliminated as well.

Acetic acid covers debility and exhaustion that occurs in any diabetic patient.
Arsenic covers the further consequences like boils, gangrene and diarrhea.
Coca covers the impotency caused due to diabetes in males
Phosphoric acid covers the nervous exhaustion and the mental debility caused by diabetes in severe cases. It is also given when there are phosphates passed in the urine.
Syzigium jambolanum covers the ulceration
Uranium nitricum covers the assimilation disorders and it deals with diabetes when it has prominent symptoms of gastro hepatic origin.

Here are two cases that were dealt by Dr. Farrington in the past during his practice and one of my own.

CASE 1

Reported by Dr. Harvey Farrington of Chicago. Roland I.P., age 62, tall, dark complexion.

Degeneration of macula lutea, both eyes, since five years; vision dim, worse in a bright light. Process seemed to be checked by Nux vomica. Mother, 82, and son, 35, have the same trouble. Younger son died of diabetes at fourteen years.
Diabetes started apparently late in 1936. Lost twenty pounds during the next year and became quite weak. Dec. 31, 1938, sugar in urine 8.5%. Phos. ac. 3X.
May 24, 1939. Weakness with perspiration. Tenderness of buttocks; hurts to sit. Spells of melancholy. Phos. ac. 1M.
June 17. Much better, more energy. Pain in buttocks better. Nov 4. Phos. ac. CM. Jan. 8, 1940. Phos. ac. CM. April 6. Phos. ac. CM. Sept. 8. Phos. ac. MM.
Sept. 15. Much stronger, says last medicine acted like magic.
Nov. 9. Sugar 0.75%, gaining weight and energy. March 1, 1941. Better in every way, sugar free if he avoids starches and foods containing cane sugar; allowed honey, pure maple or corn syrup. This case never took insulin.

CASE 2

Also reported by Dr. Farrington.Theo. J., age 50.

Not well for several months. Had arthritis in 1924 “cured” by baths at Burton Harbor, Michigan.
June 15, 1940. Sugar formed in urine ten weeks ago, taken insulin daily since. Amount of sugar in urine now 3.6%. Lost twelve pounds in the last month. Aversion to sweets. Pain in lumbar region 3 p.m. Syzygium 12X. three times a day for seven days. Insulin discontinued.
Aug. 2. Sugar free. Pain in back gone several weeks ago.
Aug. 23. Feeling fine. Has gained weight. Sept. 6. Sugar free. Losing weight again. Hunger. Diarrhea from milk or sour foods. Sulph. 1M.
Nov. 8. Gained weight; seems perfectly well. March 24, 1941. Still perfectly well.

Case 3

as seen by Tamanpreet (my own case)

A man of 40 years old, suffering from diabetes, India, dependant on insulin tablets daily.
I first prescribed him phosphorous 1m after taking his constitutional case- taking. Followed up after 1 month by syzigium jambolanum mother tincture to be taken twice daily in glass of lukewarm water. After again one month he was called for follow up, as he was getting better on reducing the insulin dosage and his blood glucose levels also decreased, I gave him kali phos to work on his nervous weakness for a month. The patient got fairly better and is on minimum insulin dosage.

The homeopathic treatment for the diabetic is the same as for any other disorder and the results are very frequently soul satisfying. I hope everyone likes this article and appreciates homeopathy for doing wonders all over the world.
