R ecently, a newly pregnant friend had her first visit with her midwife. Her midwife, a kind and lovely lady, handed her a pamphlet for the Pertussis Vaccine during pregnancy, adding that 3 babies had died of Whooping Cough in the last 2 years.
As a conscious mummy, she asked us about it.
What you should know about the Vaccine
The Pertussis vaccine (Tdap by Boostrix) is a triple vaccine with Tetanus and Diptheria. It is a subunit vaccine, meaning a part of the virus is used, rather than the whole virus. The Tdap vaccine is a non-live vaccine, and is recommended by the Center for Disease and Prevention Control (US) for pregnant women who have not already had the Tdap vaccine specifically[1].
The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published a report that found that newborns whose mothers received the Tdap vaccination during pregnancy had significantly higher concentrations of diphtheria and tetanus antitoxins, and had antibodies to the Pertussis toxin compared to newborns of mothers who did not receive Tdap.[2] However, the research qualifying the safety of the use of the vaccine during pregnancy came from pregnancy registries that were set up by the manufacturers of Tdap.
The Tdap vaccination also contains formaldehyde (used for embalming corpses), glutaraldehyde (used for such purposes as sterilisation in the health care industry and for disinfecting animal housing), Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80), and Aluminium Hydroxide.
Studies have shown that metals such as aluminium and mercury can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the brain. Aluminium has been associated with Alzheimers and other degenerative diseases. These nanoparticles can also pass through the placenta and affect the unborn baby.[3]
Formaldehyde is fatal when swallowed, and when inhaled can cause bronchitis and pneumonia. It can cause gastrointestinal problems, myositis, and lesions in the parenchymatous organs. It affects the eyes, the liver, and the kidneys[4], and can cross the placenta and enter foetal tissues, affecting the baby. Studies on pregnant rats showed increased miscarriage, foetal anomalies, decreased levels of vitamin C, and enzyme issues.[5]
Glutaraldehyde when inhaled or absorbed by the skin can cause asthma, allergic rashes, irritation in the throat, lungs and nose, sneezing and burning eyes.[6] When given to pregnant rats it lowered the birth weight of the baby.
A study completed on newborn female rats given Polysorbate 80 showed it affected the reproductive system, causing infertility (poor rats!).[7] Also, new research has indicated it could be a cause of anaphylactic shock.[8]
In NZ you are required to give written consent on receiving the Pertussis vaccination as ‘it is not part of routine prescribing guidelines in New Zealand’. It also might be worth noting that the statistics contained in the Whooping Cough vaccination pamphlet are from a US website, and do not relate to NZ.
So what to do?
Whooping Cough is a notifiable illness in NZ, and there have been 8,800 reported cases since August 2011[9]. The NZ Herald and Radio NZ state that 3 babies have died since the outbreak.
This is a serious disease, so what do you do?
As a conscious mummy, you do your research and make an informed choice. The last epidemic of whooping cough was in 2004, so it is highly likely that another epidemic will strike NZ in 10 years following this one no matter what you do. Keeping you and your family in a good state of health is always the best medicine against viruses and illnesses – getting enough rest and optimal nutrition, including superfoods, will make a difference in your life no matter what.
Secondly, you find out what your options are. The allopathic treatment of whooping cough is with respirators and antibiotics, and the earlier the treatment the more successful. Alternatively, homeopathic remedies have been used for hundreds of years, and Vitamin C in high doses has proven to be very helpful[10].
And thirdly, you keep yourself really healthy and nourished during pregnancy, which will ensure a more robust and healthy baby.
Another option is to use homeopathic prophylaxis with your baby from the age of 4 weeks old. In homeopathic prophylaxis, virus cells are made into homeopathic remedies in differing potencies. These are given in single doses in accordance with the prophylaxis programme to help reduce the body’s susceptibility to the disease itself. Because it doesn’t make antibodies, it also doesn’t rely on a fully competent immune system.
That’s great news since a child’s immune system is not fully functioning until 12-14 months of age, and is only completely mature at 6 years of age. Also, and most importantly, there are no added nasty chemicals or poisons that can affect your baby in the long run. Find out more about it here.
Options after Vaccination
If you or your baby have already been vaccinated, or you’re thinking about it and have concerns, homeopathic detoxification using the CEASE protocol could be an option where you or your child has been affected. CEASE therapy was originally developed to detox sensitive kids affected by toxins, poisons, medications or any other substance, however it’s becoming more and more useful in clearing the toxic poisoning of any person, child or adult (think dental amalgams!). CEASE can only be offered by CEASE therapists, who assess every person individually to ascertain whether CEASE is the best option for them. If you want to know more about CEASE, check out the website www.cease-therapy.com or contact us.
The main symptoms we see in children who have a history of Tdap vaccine are a persistent cough, allergies, asthma, sinusitis or muscle wasting. These can present soon afterwards or after a period of time, and some can be lifelong ailments. If you’re seeing these symptoms in your child, it would be well worth looking at some of the options above and consulting with a qualified practitioner as to how you can go about returning you and your children to the good health you deserve.
